A huge elephant door was rolled up at a warehouse between Messerole and Calyer and inside were quite a few gigantic Richard Serra sculptures. I snapped a pic or two, and then a few days later they were out in the street being placed onto flatbed trucks via some crazy crane-ish contraption. Rachel stopped by and chatted with the guys and apparently the pieces have been stored there for several years and they're being rolled out to head over to the West Side for an exhibit.

It's hard to describe how awesome it was to see this art in this particular setting: the scale is so enormous and it was just right there in front of me on a Greenpoint side street. In some weird, mostly irrational way, it made me feel proud of the neighborhood for housing this amazing art for the past several years.bklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-80294426407692764452009-09-13T18:08:00.003-04:002009-09-13T18:17:35.785-04:00I Coulda Been a ContenderWatched "On the Waterfront" a few nights ago. . .it deserves its reputation as a great fim.

In other news, two weeks ago I finally did the 2009 version of "My Own Private Century". I only did 112 miles though because I took a wrong turn that added a bunch of climbing and I got slightly turned around inside Harriman State Park. At the exact halfway point I hit some kind of large, sharp something (rock?) that tore a pretty nice gash in my front sidewall. Booted it with a tube patch and rode all the way home with 80 psi in my front tire to keep the bulge from looking threatening. Navigating my way home through Manhattan was almost more than my brain could handle, I took it super slow for that part.

Nyack and back today, felt short. River Road was covered in wet leaves and small branches which made descending a little hairy. Tried to attack the climbs, do more out of the saddle in an effort to incorporate my interval training into my outside riding. Felt good.

Good Vuelta stage today, Valverde is tough.bklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-6791743247532307622009-08-25T17:03:00.003-04:002009-08-25T17:18:23.175-04:00New Dumbek TracksHere's a couple more dumbek tracks. The first track, "Maiden Voyage" is a solo I wrote for dumbek. It's my first composition for the drum, hence the name. The second track, Warm Up Cycle, is pretty much that. It's a series of licks I learned from Raquy (except the second phrase which is my addition) that she in turn learned from Bunyamin in Istanbul.

These tracks are also my first real attempt at recording, mixing and mastering in Pro Tools. . .

bklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-71775319782301497292009-08-18T20:11:00.003-04:002009-08-18T20:24:26.670-04:00Me, percussion, cats, MC FrontalotI recently spent a fun afternoon recording some dumbek and cajon tracks for my friend MC Frontalot. The first mp3 has some of my cajon playing in it, it's a celebratory track for a friend's cat's twitter page crossing the 1 million followers mark. Whoa. The second mp3 is from the same session and is a short dumbek track. It's not exactly album ready but you get the idea.

bklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-73615145792052466252009-08-08T16:40:00.002-04:002009-08-14T09:54:35.820-04:00Weather PermittingPain is in the forcast.

Greenpoint to Harriman State Park Loop
Find more Bike Rides in Brooklyn, New Yorkbklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-23299111465556453752009-08-04T20:53:00.003-04:002009-08-05T08:00:09.028-04:00Ole!<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoMvzq8EZChApB-aPOExuUHLFnmt-aXBgDX2SBoWytJ5rSu1Wg2PNAmYDbFG2rKAWF5Wpje_KQIiqpM-_o2jdTW-FAq-xdnr6VbVhSJZU0f3eMIltyLXgO6d0Jl0k6GvuInbz1Bg/s400/farm+01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366448252883383410" />

Pretty much the best birthday week(end) ever thanks to the scheming of one Rachel Clift and one Mark Derby.bklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-11926499382941026062009-08-04T20:39:00.015-04:002009-08-14T09:55:21.718-04:00Bike VomitLe Tour:

Week one: snooze-fest. The Pyrenees were pretty dull too.
Contador-Lance: the egomaniac with the best legs won. I admit I had counted Lance out after watching the Giro, so chapeau for proving me wrong.
Garmin-Hincapie: Jerks. Wasn’t Matt White Hincapie’s teammate at Postal? Vaughters annoys me too, so smug. They did a disservice to US cycling because of their spitefulness. The flipside is unfortunately Hincapie always seems to be acting like a big baby whether he’s once again not winning Paris-Roubaix or he’s missing Yellow by 5 seconds.
Hushovd: took Green by whining as opposed to riding though Cavendish’s utterly idiotic stage-win salutes should have been enough to relegate him on every stage he won.
Jens Voigt: Hated seeing him go down on his face, he’s one of my favs in the peloton. He’s getting a touch long in the tooth, no? I’ll miss him when he goes.
Radio Shack: This is obviously not a concern for me but I wouldn’t want to be part of a team with the word “shack” in the title sponsor though I think they could have some cool kits. Also, Lance will podium in 2010.
Schlecks: It must be awesome for them.
AG2R’s kit: Didn’t make my eyeballs bleed like I thought it would. I thought the brown shorts were somehow pretty cool but then again I love brown.
France: Congrats on finally having more than one or two Frenchmen out there with some legs.
Phil and Paul: Oh, go on then. I love 'em.

In other, more personal cycling news, I bought some Easton EA50 bars off of ebay for about 10 clams and they’ve completely changed the way I feel about the bike. I could stay on that thing all day now and feel great. Ciao, numb hands! Thank god. Also got a very hip 3T stem with a removable faceplate (after ruining my existing stem trying to ram said EA50's through it) which is pretty much sex. Skipping mid-week park rides for indoor sessions and feeling stronger for it. Went out in the pouring rain last Sunday and had a great time. Made it down the state line descent before looping back around. Could’ve kept on but my glasses were fogging up and since they’re Rx I couldn’t take them off. . . Really, it’s true, I was having a lot of fun out there. If the weather looks good for Sunday I’ve got my eye on Bear Mountain. And yes, for no good reason whatsoever I’m shaving. My legs. Man it feels good though, much cooler.

In commuting news. . . I've been commuting to Ailey for probably about 5 years via bicycle. For some reason it was only about 2 weeks ago that it occured to me to try going crosstown on 61st St. instead of 60th. There is tons of Queensborough Bridge traffic emptying out onto 60th so I thought 61st might be a little more chill. Good god, there's almost no traffic on 61st so not only is it way more enjoyable, it's also faster because I catch more lights because I'm not stuck behind 2 buses and a dump truck. Why oh why did it take me so long to figure that out?

Speaking of light traffic, it is August, and that means Manhattan has cleared out to go spend a month having key parties out in the Hamptons. I wish they'd stay out there year-round.

Last bit: Gatorskins: never again. I wore out the one I had on the back and replaced it with a Conti Ultra Sport and it feels like I swapped out a square piece of granite for a lovely round pillow. Yes, they last a long time and are pretty flat-resistant but they're not that flat-proof and for the cost of one Gatorskin I could buy three Zaffiros.

The end.bklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-45784333358297490742009-07-27T20:05:00.002-04:002009-07-27T20:06:02.923-04:00"I said HUNGEEZ!!!!"<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5TUWniJBLL-IyrUPWMtNRom2OgdOPYI-o7EgDWtzkA-d4BGfwmduo9K1qZNVk3sKcnrga5AZGMGiWg5GYf_TmTMH10V9rfq4EBHbuuee7SF_6kkC07wk1EfM0gcWOT7fEx_VfMA/s400/Photo_07.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363295546210429122" />bklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-76661004551198485082009-07-08T16:24:00.002-04:002009-07-08T16:24:55.576-04:00Congrats!<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD0tuDzEI30sz2uX7ab0SPpUnz712GdZkciAbwx40UCDaKnPYgkR9T8e8xa5HjJgUE0py0PbWFVW8VS8A_-LvDMFcvwvfiRACzlH20k5e60QjIE1P3IhmVxtamkL7hkPsBmZHi_A/s320/hot+sex.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356187929617540850" />bklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-69962810946361483842009-07-06T09:18:00.004-04:002009-07-06T09:20:34.992-04:00July 4th<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvfp9zYZBkDkNGttOTZ2mrix-C0sgEd4VljFDoczEAj5wvQ-E50kLMzRynNK2_Q3lJrtKiAtG0ZfVmkeuWTT2P-K7xik3H92petqjbWIGbTq-BkHjIDgBRts5hwDWPDKjjOdAMuA/s400/july+4th.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355336136847061186" />
No fireworks, but a pretty sweet view just the same. Though the high is only supposed to be 50 today, I thought I'd mix things up a bit by getting off the trainer and taking the Pista up to The Cloisters. The roads were pretty quiet and after a loop around The Cloisters I decided to see how many roadies were out by taking a trip out and back on the GWB. The answer is quite a lot.

On the way back home riding down Riverside Drive I got doored. I was thankfully a few feet away from parked cars so I didn't take the full door, I think the door actually caught my right calf, I'm not sure. At any rate, I went flying and landed on my back. Maybe the door hit my bars too, I'm not sure, but they took a pretty good whack somehow because the drops were pointing skyward when I picked up the bike. [edit: Upon further reflection and bike inspection I think I safely conclude that the door struck the right side of my bars and also hit my right calf.]

The guy stuck around, was nice and very apologetic. I didn't feel pissed off, just more a sense of disbelief. The bike looked ok, I didn't have any broken bones, so it could've been much worse. Of course I didn't discover the massive hop in my front wheel until after he walked away. SO STUPID!! That should have been the first thing I checked. I feel sure he would have given me cash to replace it. I did true it up enough so that it's rideable (we'll see if it holds because there is definitely some pretty serious unbalanced spoke tension going on. . .) So my lower back is nice and puffy and my calf muscle is killing me but I'll live. Had I been on the Moser, oy, I can't even think about it. Let's put it this way, I don't think I would have forgotten to walk with him to an ATM.

Sometimes I wish I only had a casual interest in cycling and could, say, go to the gym instead. I'm over getting hurt doing something I love. I know I'm a responsible, skilled rider and I'm trying to fight off feeling like there is some kind of fuku over my head. The first f'ing ride of Spring! C'mon!!bklyn74http://www.blogger.com/profile/02733986053886235416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12283176.post-82773337503662455822009-03-22T17:18:00.003-04:002009-03-22T17:22:36.611-04:00DR PixAn amazing week in the DR. It's been a while since I made lasagna. . .it's a lot of work (but worth it). This time I didn't make the pasta but used "no boil" boxed pasta which is pretty good.
